Twisted Pair Types

  1. UTP - twisted pairs are not shielded, there is no external shield. The most common type for apartment computer networks, when there are no large interference and distances.
  2. FTP - twisted pairs are not shielded, but there is an external foil shield. It is used in small offices where it is necessary to transmit data over distances of up to 100 m without loss of speed, and where interference is encountered.
  3. STP - each twisted pair is braided with a wire protective shield, there is an external shield. Used in mid-sized offices and establishments where there may be leads. They allow you to maintain the quality of the signal when transmitting over long distances, but not higher than 100 m.
  4. SF / UTP - twisted pairs are not shielded, but there is an outer copper braid and foil film that make up the double shield. They are used in enterprises to maintain signal quality over long distances and to protect against interference.
  5. S / FTP - each twisted pair is shielded with foil, there is an external shield in the form of a copper braid. It is used at enterprises with high interference and where it is necessary to maintain the speed of information transmission over a long distance.

The color of the cable insulation is gray, which is the most widely used color. Red or orange color means the insulation is made of non-combustible material.

Two ways to crimp twisted pair

The Rj-45 computer cable is connected to the device via the 8P8C connector (abbreviation of the English words 8 positions, 8 contacts). This connector mounts to the cable using an 8-core twisted pair crimp in a color scheme based on telecommunications standards.

The 568-A standard is obsolete and the most commonly used 568-B.

Direct twisted pair connection by color

Direct twisted pair connection 100 Mb / s

In some cases, when a high speed of the Internet is not required and traffic of large volumes is not provided, you can use a connection according to the colors of a twisted pair of 4 cores: white-red, red, white-emerald, emerald. This method saves the consumption of wires, but it must be borne in mind that the highest information transfer rate drops 10 times and is 100 Mb / s.

Crossover Twisted Pair

The second way is cross or cross. Crimping a twisted pair of 8 cores (color scheme) is shown below, it is used to combine two computers into a home network without any network equipment or two client devices of the same type (computer, TV, laptop).

To make a crossover cable, you need to crimp one end of the wire according to the 568 A standard, and the other according to the 568 V standard. In this case, the veins are swapped: white-red with white-emerald, red with emerald. In this case, the information transfer rate will be only 100 Mbit / s. The Gigabit Crossover scheme involves swapping all eight veins: white-red with white-emerald, red with emerald, blue with white-chocolate and white-blue with chocolate. How to crimp a network cable?

Using two knives on the crimper, you can cut the cable to the desired length. Then remove 2 cm of outer insulation from both ends of the cable using a knife and a notch in the crimper near the handles of the tool. Spin the twisted pairs to make 8 separate cores. They are laid out in a row, according to the color scheme of the pinout of the twisted pair of 8 wires.

If any vein is longer, it should be cut to the level of others. Insert the connector with the cable into the crimper socket with the inscription 8P. Squeeze the handles firmly but smoothly until they click. If you have a tool on hand, this procedure is quite simple, but if there are no pliers, then you can get by with a flat screwdriver. To do this, you need to put the tip of the screwdriver on the connector contact and push until it cuts through the insulation of the core with its teeth. Do this with each of the eight contacts. Then you should also push through the central part of the connector body - a notch on the connector near the cable entry for fixing. If it didn't work the first time, you can cut off the failed connector and do it again.

Check the quality of work with a multimeter. To do this, set the "resistance" mode on the device. To check the device, close the two probes together, the resistance should show 0 - it means there is a contact. Then put one probe in contact at one end of the cable, and the other probe on the corresponding color contact at the other end. If it shows 0, therefore, there is a connection, everything is fine. If it shows 1 or so, then the teeth did not break through the insulation, you should either push the contacts again, or cut and do it again.

The need to crimp an Internet cable at home without the help of an Internet provider does not often arise. For example, such a need may arise if you move your computer or router to another room. In this article, you will learn how to properly crimp an Internet cable at home with your own hands.

Step # 1. Preparing to crimp the Internet cable.

Step # 2. Remove the outer layer of insulation.

If you want to crimp your internet cable, the first thing you need to do is remove the outer layer of insulation. This can be done using a sharp knife or blade on the cable crimping tool (crimper). After you have removed the insulation from the Internet cable and straightened the conductors, you need to arrange them in the correct order. There are four standards for the order of conductors in a connector. These are two standards for straight-through cable (TIA / EIA-568B and TIA / EIA-568A) and two standards for crossover. In most cases, you will need to use the TIA / EIA-568B straight wiring diagram (illustration below) to crimp your internet cable. If your internet cable has already been compressed before, then you can simply see how the conductors were located in the old RJ-45 connector.

Crimping a four-wire twisted pair

It is used less often, because it provides a data transfer rate of no more than 100 Mbps (on a standard cable, the speed can reach 1000 Mbps). The crimping process for a four-wire twisted pair is the same as for an eight-wire pair: the same connectors and crimping pliers are used. But at the same time, only a part of the contacts is involved in the connector, namely 1, 2, 3 and 6, and the rest remain empty.

The color designations of conductors in a four-core twisted pair can be different, but most often there are two options:

The most common conductor for LAN equipment is SAT-5 or its modification SAT5e. It consists of four pairs of multi-colored cores and provides up to 100 Mbps at 100 MHz.

Connectors

All modern computer equipment intended for widespread use for network connections has standard standard connectors for a plug labeled 8P8C. Sometimes such a connector is called RJ-45 for some reason. But no matter how they are called, they have the same purpose - to connect the "twisted pair" with any device. These plugs, like the cable, may or may not be shielded. The connector is a plastic head with eight grooves cut into it for laying the conductor cores. Moving contacts are installed at the end of these slots, which clamp the wires. When installing, the numbering of the grooves is very important. If the connector is placed with the contacts upwards and with a latch towards itself, then the first contact will be on the left, and the eighth contact on the right.

There are two known options for the location of the "twisted pair" conductors in the connectors:

Connection types

The EIA / TIA-568A variant is used to crimp a network cable, which will be connected at one end to a computer, and at the other end to one of the switching devices (router, SWITCH, modem, etc.). This type of connection is called direct. But there is another - cross or cross. It is used to connect two computers directly. Direct crimping of the network cable provides for fastening the connectors according to the EIA / TIA-568A scheme at both ends. This is the most common type of connection, since usually more than two computers are used in local networks, connected through a SWITCH or other types of switches. If, nevertheless, it becomes necessary to connect two machines together, then a cross connection is used. To crimp a computer-to-computer network cable, connect one end of the cable to the connector using EIA / TIA-568A technology, and the other using EIA / TIA-568B. For a direct connection, you can use not all 8 cores, but only 4, but this will decrease by 10 times. All 8 cores are used in cross connection.

Preparing the cable

Before crimping, the conductor must be stripped of insulation. You can cut the cable with an ordinary knife, but the performance of our patch cord and the quality of data transmission will depend on how carefully this is done. The outer insulation is cut at a distance of 20-25 mm from the end. It is important not to damage the insulation of the cores, which can lead to their subsequent short circuit. After the insulation has been removed, it is necessary to unwind all pairs and straighten them in the order of EIA / TIA-568A or EIA / TIA-568B, depending on the type of connection required.

How to crimp a network cable with a crimper

Craftsmen use special pliers (crimper). If there is no such instrument at home, you can buy it at any store that sells radio components. The cost of the simplest crimper is about 200 rubles. Before crimping the network cable, make sure that the cores do not cross each other.

Then we insert them into the grooves of the connector until they stop and fix them. Visually, you should make sure that all the wiring rested against the front wall of the plug head, none of them accidentally fell into the "foreign rut", and that the crimping scheme was not violated. If, nevertheless, there were no special tongs, and there is no way to buy them, there is an option of how to crimp the network cable manually. Good eyesight and a thin screwdriver or knife are useful here. Having cleaned the "twisted pair" from the outer insulation and laid out its cores in the desired order, we place them in the connector and again fix it with our fingers. In this case, the plug must be with the contacts facing up.

Resting the lower part of the connector on a table or other horizontal surface, use a screwdriver or knife to move them one by one all the way down. In this case, the teeth of the contacts will cut the insulation of the wires and fix them in the lower position. When buying connectors and planning to crimp them manually, it is better to take a few extra ones, because the first time it may not work out, and you will have to run to the store again.

When crimping a cable, situations often arise when everything seems to be done correctly, but there is no connection. In this case, you should check the layout of the conductors and double-check it for compliance with the type of connection.
