We recently went to Finland by car. And what else to go if you want to see the most interesting places? Not by bus… This time the purpose of the trip was not discussed. We went to discover new national parks. The choice fell on the Koli National Park, one of the most popular in Finland. And in this article you will find a trip report and coordinates of interesting places in the Koli Park.

Koli Park is located in Eastern Finland, not far from Joensuu (a very nice town). The routes in the park are very diverse - walking, water, and skiing. The entire walking route along Koli is about 60 kilometers, but it is also divided into “sub-routes”. They do not present any difficulties in passing, but there is nothing to do here with a stroller or a bicycle. Mass of rocks, pines and water. The highest mountain in Eastern Finland, Ukko-Koli (347 m), is located in the Koli National Park. And we climbed this highest point with the whole family, so you can see for yourself that the routes here are quite accessible to small children:

But - let's not get ahead of ourselves and talk about our trip to Finland in a Renault Duster car in order.

We crossed the border between Finland and Russia at Vartsila and passed it quickly and without problems, although on the forums they are frightened by total searches due to the presence of an abyss of free time at the border guards. There was one exception - the Russian border guards, in addition to Tanya's passport, also asked for a certificate of her birth. The border was passed in the evening, and we didn’t get to Koli Park that day (and the weather left much to be desired). Therefore, having bought sanctioned cheese and other delicacies, we stopped at (in the Joensuu area, the most comfortable laavu for an overnight stay are covered houses with a hearth and wide benches):

In the morning, having got hold of the plan of the park (purchased in the info center of the town of the same name), drove up to the "main" entrance to the Koli Park, left the car in the parking lot and went to explore a new interesting place in Finland. Parking coordinates: N 63 5.690 E 29 48.200. From here you can take the free lift or stairs. True, it is not high (Kolya does not differ in heights). We chose the elevator:

We left at the spa hotel Break Sokos Hotel Koli(for those who need round-the-clock beauty or are planning a few days of hiking or skiing around Koli, this hotel is perfect) and right there were on one of the observation decks:

After taking pictures, we went on a "hike in the mountains", as our Tanya put it. Somewhere there are steps, somewhere there are stones, somewhere there are wooden footbridges, somewhere there are tree roots…

And somewhere puddles. Stopped at the top Ukko-Koli, Akka-Koli, Paha-Koli.

We had a snack on a smooth rock, and sunbathed a little under the cool August sun:

We chose a short route, only 3 km. Because in this part of the park we managed to see all the "species" places, go the usual way, even if the Finnish forest was too lazy, but I also wanted to see other sights.

And we went to Räsävaara observation tower. You can leave the car in the parking lot at the point with coordinates N63 07.545 E 29 43.470 (there is a meager laavu, suitable for lunch and inconvenient for spending the night) and take a walk up the mountain on foot. Go about 800 meters. But if you have an SUV, then you can drive to the very tower (N63 7.720 E 29 43.640). From the parking lot at the tops of the Koli National Park, drive 15 kilometers. The tower is 18 meters high. And from it, too, views, which is called "super duper". And forward and down.

Next stop is at devil's caves(The Finns call it the Church of the Devil). But in fact, this is an ordinary crevice among the stones, not too deep and does not require special dexterity when climbing into it. This point of the Koli National Park can be skipped if time is short. If you want to stop by, the coordinates of the entrance to the cave: N 63 02.648 E 29.55.125. Walk about 200 meters from the parking lot.

The day began to decline towards evening, and we went to look for a laava for the night. We found a similar one in which we spent the night the night before and arranged a global drying of mushrooms:

The next day, we had planned "attractions" that can be seen in the Koli National Park - a self-driving ferry and a ford across the river.

The ferry is at Kiviniemi(coordinates N 63 59.447 E 29.55.700). "Pull-pull" ... And in a minute the other shore! There is also a hiking route, but it does not represent any special beauties - you know, go through the forest. There are no heights, special views too. So we limited ourselves to the ferry, walked 500 meters through the forest to a convenient parking lot with a fireplace, a toilet and a woodshed, and turned back to the car. There is a laavu equipped for lunch/overnight 200 meters from the parking lot. But it is located next to the farm. If this does not bother you, you can safely plan a “long” stop. Walk about 400 meters from the parking lot to the ferry.

We go to the ford across the river Herajoki to show the child the courage and bravery of the parents. We walk back and forth several times, holding on to safety ropes. There is a current, but not strong, and wading does not pose any danger. Ford coordinates in the Koli National Park: N 63 0.297 E 29.58.782 But there is no road access to the beach (in Finland they strictly watch for silence and order and often deprive the car of the opportunity to stand next to the owners). We are too lazy to carry things 300 meters away, and we are again going to look for laava. To dry the mushrooms again on the hearth.

We spend the night with the maximum possible comfort and drive ... towards Russia. But before that we stop in Joensuu at the pillbox museum. The museum is free and interestingly designed. Trenches, two bunkers, a lot of exhibits from a telephone to a mannequin sleeping on a bunk, photographs. The bunkers even have periscopes and other devices for monitoring the enemy and you can aim a gun or machine gun. The exposition of the museum in pillboxes, like most of its kind in Finland, is available only in summer. This fact is not clear to us. But, since we got here in the summer, we wandered around and looked with pleasure. By the way, you can walk around the territory at any time of the year.

Well, if for some reason you cannot get to Finland by car, you can see how much air travel costs:

Here is such a Finnish outing with three overnight stays we got. I liked the Koli National Park very much. Maybe even more than studied. And we will definitely return here, since we go to Finland by car regularly, although not as often as we would like.

To enjoy the amazing panorama of Lake Pielinen, people visit the Koli National Park. In winter, people ski from the highest mountain in Finland, in summer, they walk among the trees, admiring the scenery. Artists from all over the world find inspiration in this place. An extensive program has been prepared for guests with excursions, visits to restaurants with local cuisine.

What kind of place is it

Koli National Park is a symbol of the northern country; its area is 30 sq. km. km. For more than a century, it has attracted tourists from all over the world to its slopes.

On its territory there is the highest hill in southern Finland, 253 m high. As well as the ski resorts of Koli in Finland - Ukko-Koli and Loma-Koli with slopes for beginners and professional athletes.

Lots of entertainment for every taste - cycling, fishing, horseback riding courses, open-air spa treatments.

History

The history of this region dates back to the Stone Age. During excavations, archaeologists found out that the first people on this earth appeared many centuries ago. But permanent residents settled only in the 18th century.

By the end of the 18th century, the government decided to make this unique area as comfortable as possible for guests. In 1896, the first houses intended for travelers were built.

In the 19th century, 500 people visited the Koli resort, and already in 1935 the number of tourists increased to 2300. This was facilitated by the construction of a motorway with parking spaces, from where the ski resort track began.

During the Second World War, Koli stopped working. After the war and crises, the resort was restored and equipped, and it became visited again.

In 1991, Koli was recognized as a national treasure; more than 100 thousand people visit it every year.

Climate

The climate in the park is special, hills of different heights prevail here, which explains the sharp temperature drop.

In autumn it is much warmer near Lake Pielinen, in summer it is very humid, with frequent rains and fogs. There is a lot of snow on the rocks in winter.

Despite the low temperatures, all the surroundings are covered with vegetation.

Nature

Due to the large elevation differences in the region, the vegetation here is very diverse. Coniferous forests are located on the tops of the mountains and near the lake, tall grass grows along the streams.

In the southern part of the forest area there is a cave, if you go deeper, a beautiful panoramic view of the lake and forests, the top of the hill opens up.

Landscape

The mountains are located even in the lake. Small islands protrude above the surface of Pielinen, which were formed from mineral deposits during the melting of glaciers. The mountain range is a chain of small islands.

Among the trees on the slope is an amazing waterfall. In winter, the water is covered with ice, since March everything around is melting, at this time of the year the waterfall is the most beautiful.

But the quartz rocks are not the only attraction of the area; there are sandy beaches near the river.

Flora

Coniferous trees grow throughout the territory, aspens, birches and lindens are also found here.

Most of the forests have not been cut down for centuries, but special paths and clearings have been created for guests so as not to get lost.

The windows on the train are like big TV panels. They have black and white movies on their screens. A black forest covered with snow, white lakes covered with ice and a white sky with snow falling from... Honest monochrome. Only two colors - black and white... white... white.

// c-myxuh.livejournal.com

The train is amazing. Here, it seems, a foreign country ... No, exactly, a foreign country ... With border guards, customs officers, checking documents ... And yet, without planes turning their hearts over with their roar, registration and duty free ... everything ... too much It's just... Not really, is it? Like a trip to Samara... or St. Petersburg... Coupe, tea in a rare iron cup holder, with an invariably tinkling teaspoon... the sound of wheels. And time, which still beat with a frantic pulse at the Leningradsky railway station, suddenly stops, as soon as you get on the train.

// c-myxuh.livejournal.com

Finland is easy. It is closer than it seems, however, St. Petersburg residents have known this for a long time and travel around Scandinavia in their cars. They go like they're going to the country. Who go fishing, who go skiing, who, just for food.

In Finland // c-myxuh.livejournal.com

Ukko Koli-Ukko-Koli (translated from Finnish - Grandfather Koli, the highest mountain in North Karelia (354 meters, 253 meters above the water surface, Lake Pielinen). I have never seen such fir trees. Like fantastic sculptures ... they are similar on tall, melted candles. Only huge ones. Covered with snow, completely white. Sometimes the firs sway and then it seems that they are alive ...

Gorv Ukko Koli-Ukko-Koli, Finland // c-myxuh.livejournal.com

By some miracle, the snow does not fall from the branches ... at all ... it seems to be glued. It's hard to imagine that every tree has... three tons of snow... a whole truckload. A winter fairy tale .... To finally believe in a fairy tale, you need to add to the picture a white and prickly, spruce forest on a slope, under which there is an incredible lake. Like a sea bay... And hundreds of islands, like stones scattered in a Japanese garden. Big and small ... tiny ... How many of them - no one counts ...

// c-myxuh.livejournal.com

Curiosity made me look at Wikipedia. There are more than 1200 islands. It is difficult to imagine, to count ... hardly ... but you can see this miracle ... The length of Lake Pielinen is 120 kilometers, the width is 40. From the islands, on pink ice, the low January sun draws incredibly long blue shadows . And yet ... silence, setting the body for peace and tranquility. With nature, the world, yourself.

In Ukko-Koli National Park, Finland // c-myxuh.livejournal.com

Ukko-Koli is a national park in which the first slope for downhill and slalom appeared already in 1938. The park is almost untouched by civilization, although it received such a status relatively recently - in 1991. Here, not only trees are protected, but also the landscape, so the ski slopes laid in the reserved forest, on the slopes, are made in such a way as to preserve the existing relief.

// c-myxuh.livejournal.com

As a result, very interesting routes turned out, winding and with a variable slope, both longitudinal and transverse. That is, if you make sections along the slope and draw their outline on paper, you will get waves. Like a swing. You accelerate, you take off. At the top point, unloading, change of edge ... A lot of fun. The Association of Finnish Ski Centers recognized the resort as the Ski Center of the Year 2013.

// c-myxuh.livejournal.com

The panorama of the winter forest seems to stick to the window. They say that it was this view that inspired Jean Sibelius, and he ordered a piano to be brought to Koli and .... inspired to play music on it ... setting the instrument on top of the hill (isn't it from here - "piano in the bushes"?). Is it true or legend, who's to say? But it is absolutely certain that among the numerous works of Sibelius there is an overture "Karelia" (1893). Why not?

// c-myxuh.livejournal.com

With views like this, yes, on the border of a national park... it's hard to imagine a better place for a hotel. Under the windows of the route and the upper station of the armchair. Stylish hotel. Everything is simple and unobtrusive, without architectural excesses, completely, in the concept of Scandinavian design. Simple, comfortable, spacious. Restrained, dark color of the facades, not in conflict with the surrounding nature, glass, wood. Comfortable rooms.

// c-myxuh.livejournal.com

Restaurant with a wonderful view. Large windows, thanks to which the interiors are open to the forest. Breakfast is like a picnic in the forest.

If you tell someone from Finns that you have been to Koli, they will probably ask you .... have you been to the spa? In a country where you can’t surprise anyone with a sauna, or rather, you can only surprise with its absence, the question may alert ... but this is if you, suddenly, were not in this spa ... but if you were there ... the question will not surprise absolutely... The category is not to be missed.

Koli Relax Spa, at Break Sokos Hotel Koli. The ticket is 40 euros, if you are alone. If "dad, mom, son, dog"... oops another son (or daughter), up to 12 years old (with a dog, still not allowed) you are entitled to a family ticket. 80 euros for four... But... after 4 p.m., the sauna can only be used by adults (over 18).

You will be handed a full basket, like the one that Little Red Riding Hood had, only instead of cakes, there will be a beauty kit ... let's call it that .... a bunch of numbered plastic bottles and bags ... and a plan - a guide to the spa ... with instructions for the use of these vials, in which place and how they should be used correctly.

The spa has three saunas.

Fire (Tilu) is the hottest. This is a classic Finnish sauna, with a temperature of 80 degrees.
Stone (Kivi) - aromatic sauna, 60-70 degrees.
Water (Vesi) - wet Turkish bath, 40-50 degrees.

Several pools and jacuzzis, with different water temperatures, from ice to hot - in those jacuzzis that are located on the outdoor terrace. I must say that a cap that you can take to the spa is very useful in a hot bath, in the open, frosty air.

There is also a music pool. It seems that the pool is like a pool, what is musical in it is not immediately clear. But, you should lie down in the water... so that the water closes your ears and you can hear the music under the water.

Aromatic showers with tropical showers and May rain, and a relaxation area with fruit bowls and tea. From here you can sit in a sun lounger and admire the surrounding landscape.

However, the entire spa is exposed to the national park with glazing from floor to ceiling. The doors of the saunas are also made of glass, and this is precisely the main idea - pleasing the body, contemplating the beauty of North Karelia ... practically without leaving the bathhouse.

The interior is stylish and truly chic. Natural stone, dark wood, soft light. Not without traditional techniques, with an accentuated texture of the material, for example, in the decoration, natural wooden shingles were used, which are used in the device of blood in old rural houses.

// c-myxuh.livejournal.com

Snowshoeing is reminiscent of summer mountain hiking. Basically, it's a walk. Snowshoes are similar to ordinary skis, very conditionally. You can’t glide like on skis, you can only walk on them.

// c-myxuh.livejournal.com

Short and very wide, so as not to fall through the snow. The heel is free, the toe of the boot is fixed. A special technique, due to the position of the heel, allows you to climb uphill (as if on toes) or go down without slipping. In the hands of ski poles.

// c-myxuh.livejournal.com

Three marked routes: 1.5 km, 3 and 4 km, pass through the forest, with access to high viewpoints, on the hills of Ukko-Akka and Paha-Koli, from where a fantastically beautiful panorama of the lake and the national park opens.

// c-myxuh.livejournal.com

There are plenty of options for active winter entertainment that will make your holiday in Koli rich:
- cross-country skiing - the total length of tracks for classic and skating is about 60 km, including a 25 km illuminated track, in one direction, from Loma-Koli to Kopravaaru, it is the longest in Finland. (Ski map http://issuu.com/koli.fi/docs/kolin_lat ukartta)
- Alpine skiing and snowboarding. Two resorts (Loma-Koli and Ukko-Koli), with pistes, lifts and snow parks.
- walks on snowshoes, along picturesque routes of varying degrees of difficulty and length.
- snowmobiles, both on rough terrain and on the ice of the lake.
- dog sledding with a husky.
- horseback riding.
- fishing. Well, what is Finland without this national identity? By the way, fresh salmon, hot smoked, unusually tasty.
- peat sauna
