There is always a way out of the situation! As an assistant in your musical affairs, you can safely take a regular computer. Fortunately, there are plenty of programs for it: you want, write music on notes, and do not know the notes, it is possible and without them, in principle, to do, it is enough just to visually navigate in the piano keyboard.

But fully writing all the parties tools in such programs for quite a long time ... And I would like the way with a real ensemble: you give chords and in a couple of minutes everything is already playing what you need. And it turns out that such programs also have, but free among them - rarity: (

Until recently, the CHordPulse Lite program could be used. It, even trimmed, the functional was enough to quickly create a rhythm section of the melody in the desired style. However, today the Lite version has abolished, replacing completely free, but extremely "kuts" by an option in which only 4 chord is available - 4 Chord Songs.

Maybe someone has four chords and enough, but this is not enough for me :) And I decided, as always, try to find an alternative. The result of the search has become, suddenly :), Microsoft program - SONGSMITH (Academic Edition).

In general, the program is paid and costs almost 30 bucks ... But if you are a teacher or student, then you have the opportunity to use it free, that is, for nothing. Naturally, for the sake of free, we can turn around, even though cosmonauts :) But this is not necessary to do this! Since the program is not updated since 2012, Microsoft has suspended its sales. Now, essentially, either a demo version on the official website, or described on this page a full-featured edition "for teachers and students" :)

Comparison with CHordpulse auto accumpact

The program for its work uses realistic sounding styles, which were created by the developers of the well-known auto-accompaniment program Band-in-A-Box, so the sound of the received rhythm section is practically not inferior in Chordpulse. However, the differences in programs are also quite serious. I propose to compare Songsmith and, now fully paid, Chordpulse:

So, we analyze the pros and cons of both programs. Undoubted, and huge, plus Chordpulse is a large number of styles (more than 100 pieces, and in the free version of all - 24). However, its "trump card" is also available at Songsmith :) This program allows us to introduce chords as manually (using a mouse or keyboard), and by means of a simple melody in the microphone! The program will automatically pick up the necessary chords of your voice - the main thing is to sing more or less accurately :)

You can save the ready-made melody in Songsmith as in the form of a MIDI file and immediately into the WAV or WMA audio file, and even with vocals!

But, on any barrel of honey there is its own part of the game ... In Songsmith, such a party is the lack of the cyclic playback function of the melody (although there is a tricky way to get around this problem :)), as well as the ability to use no more than two chords in one cloth (in Chordpulse you can divide for a quarter). Plus, it turned out that Songsmith does not always work correctly with the microphone ... Perhaps this is due to the fact that I have Windows 8, but at times the program simply did not write anything while trying to sing the melody into the microphone (manual input version always worked ).

Installation of auto accompaniment

To install the program legally, you have already mentioned above, you need to register in the project for teachers from Microsoft. However, for informational purposes, the program can be downloaded and right from our site;)

The Songsmith installer comes in the form of an MSI file, which is no different from traditional EXE installers. We launch it and all the time we click "Next" - nothing more from us is required :) The only nuance - the installation can delay a little if you have no libraries on the computer .NET Framework 3.0 (or higher) and hotfix for Windows Presentation Foundation. All these components, in the case of their absence, will be automatically downloaded and installed.

When everything is ready, you can run the program and start using it.

Songsmith project preparation master

Each time the Songsmith launch will open us a special project preparation wizard (unless we turn it off in the settings), which will allow us to quickly prepare for the creation of an accompaniment:

In the starting window, we will have the opportunity to choose the creation of a new song ("New Song"), go to the latest edited project and enable one of the three demo records. Below will be the "PREVIEW SELECT STARTING POINT" checkbox. If you remove it, then in Songsmith, when you select one or another item in the wizard, a demonstration of the selected item will not be played.

If you are an experienced user, you can refuse to work with the master at all by clicking the "Cancel" button downstairs. But for the familiarization, we will still go through the items of the assistant by clicking the "Next" button:

The first step towards creating an accompaniment will be setting styles. Here with the help of a venier or buttons on the sides of it you can choose one of the available 30 styles of different musical directions. Here I advise you to turn on the panel to the right of the style switch. You have the opportunity to choose the mood ("Style Mood") of the melodies (by default it is "Light" (Easy), but there is also a "Lively" (live), as well as enable the display of additional information about the style ("Show Style Details") .

In principle, there is no more interesting here, so we click again the "Next" button and go to the tempo setting:

This is the last window of the settings wizard and here, except, in fact, the tempo, there is nothing more to customize :). The playback speed by tradition is measured in shocks per minute (BPM) and is regulated by the venier or up-down buttons on the right. After you select the desired pace, click the "Finish" button and begin the study of the work area itself.

The Songsmith interface is pretty simple and, as in Chordpulse, consists in essence, from one single working window, broken into the zone:

The entire interface can be divided into three large zones:

1. Top Control Panel. The global project management buttons are collected here, such as creating, downloading and saving, recording and playback panel, as well as cancellation, cleaning the workspace and settings.
2. Work zone. This is an area in the center of the program window in which our melody will be displayed in the form of clocks and chords on them.
3. Lower toolbar. This is the most motley and saturated part of the Songsmith interface. Here are the settings of the style (genre, mood and the level of "jazziness" of chords), the clocks (the number of chords on the tact and the button of adding / deleting the clocks), the pace (the slider will not work if you specified the pace through the settings wizard) and the sound level (indicator recording level, voltage controls vocal and overall volume, as well as a mixer of virtual tools).

Before you start working with the program, it is advisable to get acquainted with the settings and adjust them to your needs.

Since everything is in English here, I think it is worth paying attention to some items and translate them. So:

• Count-in Bars (introductory clocks). In fact, this account is usually broken with drum sticks so that the group can tune in to the right rhythm. The default is one, but in the program you may not have time to quickly tune in for one beat, therefore, it is possible to increase this number;
• INCLUDE "ENDING" BARS (include final clocks). According to the music, this is called "code", that is, one or more clocks at the very end of your melody. In Songsmith, these are two additional clocks at the very end, which are not surrounded in the duration of the song, but serve to "revive" her ending;
• Drum Style for Recording Backing Track. In this program, we can diversify the rhythm of your song, using the style of a shock party, different from the current main style;
• Open "New Song Starter" AT START-UP (use the settings wizard at startup). This item allows you to disable the constantly annoying assistant to create a new melody when the program is turned on.

Also, I also advise you to click on the "Microphone Configuration" button and configure the sensitivity of the microphone.

Creation of accompaniment

We leave from the settings and now everything is ready for work. If you have a microphone, turn it on, preferably, dress the headphones and press the red record button in the center. It will sound a tact (or more) of an entrance account, after which you can start singing - recording will start. To complete the record, click the "Stop" button as a black square on the top panel. It should turn out something similar to the following screenshot:

I created a quick song with a dynamically changing melody, so I installed the maximum possible tact in the program for two (by default there is one chord on the beat). This must be set in advance, since then when changing breakdown, the entire melody will shift.

Try running playback (button with a green triangle) and evaluate the quality of picking chords under what you put. There is a nuance here. You can get a melody and without a microphone, but it will be the standard improvisation of the program around the default tonality (I have re-major). In any case, the music synthesis algorithms are far from perfect, so the finished song almost always requires chords.

Edit chords

You can work with chords in Songsmith in two ways: with the help of direct input from the keyboard and using the mouse and menu system. To enter the keyboard, you can simply highlight the tact in which you need to change something and simply enter a new letter designation for the chord you need. Managing the mouse comes down to the menu call (arrogant down the right) and the choice of the desired item. There are only four of them (see Previous Screenshot):

1. Lock (lock) - a function that allows you to protect the chosen chord from the edit (for example, when rewrittening the melody with the overlay of the second voice;
2. Edit (edit) - Actually, the entrance to the chord Edit menu;
3. Suggest (Suggest) - the drop-down menu containing a small list of recommended alternative chords for the current tonality;
4. Clear (Clear) - allows you to remove chord from the selected clock.

To change the chord, you can use one of the recommended in the "Suggest" section, but it is not a fact that the program will turn on this list exactly we need sober. Therefore, most often it is necessary to either enter from the keyboard (if you are well versed in the notation), or use the "Edit" menu:

The chord edit window is quite simple and consists of two lines. The first line - "Simple Chord" - allows the mouse in the first list to choose a chord tonic, and in the second its configuration (minor, major, sepkord, etc.). If you need to add a complex chord with a changed bass and add-ons, then you should manually enter it in the "Complex Chord" field. The AUTOMATICALLY PLAY CHORD checkbox allows you to immediately listen to the sound of the chosen chord.

It seems to be simple, however there are several secrets. You can diversify rhythm by adding different pauses in the right places. This is done by adding a certain number of points to the current chord. For example, you can write like this: "C ..." This will mean that chord to major will sound only one-quarter, and after it the remaining three-quarters will be a pause (frequent reception in rock and roll).

But this is not all :) If necessary, you can leave some tools to play further when everyone else is silent! In the same rock and rolls, often the first share is played together, and during the pause only shock (or shock and bass) sounds. This can be done by specifying which tools should sound. For example, in relation to the above-mentioned reception, we can apply such a record: "CD ...". This means that our to major sounds just like only one quarter of the clock, but during the pause, drums continue to play (Sokr. From Drums - Impact).

By analogy, you can also control the rest of the tools using the first letter of their English name:

Setting up tools

And now the most important secret :). In Songsmith there is no function of the loop playback of the melody, however, if you activate the "Preview Instrument Changes" option in the mixer mode, then at the end of the playback, the song will start playing again in a circle. True, at the beginning she will be interrupted for a split second, but this is not very critical, the main thing is that, in fact, we get the music of non-stop, which can be improvised at least to infinity :)

Preservation options for finished projects

Now that the song is written, we enjoyed played and want to turn off the program, it would not hurt to save everything that we have crowded. To do this, click on the "Save Song" button on the top control panel and select the storage type:

By default, pressing the button saves the project as a file in the format.songSMith format for the subsequent opening in the program. But. If you click on the arrow down to the right of the button itself, then we will fall into the menu where there is also a function of exporting our work into a sound file.

We can export to choose from either a WMA or WAV audio file (vocal party will be saved), or in MIDI for subsequent editing and finishing in the MIDI editor (vocals are not saved). Advantages and Disadvantages of Songsmith

• the focus function is not provided (partially solved in the mixer mode);

The program is positioned by Microsoft, as a universal tool for creativity. They argue that with Songsmith you can write your unique and unique song. However, it is somewhat exaggerated :) Yes, the program, unlike analogs, gives us some degree of freedom in the choice of instruments and alignment of accents, but, alas, no more: (anyway, edit the "sewn" styles under themselves we can not .
