It is clear that the pleasant was not always combined with the useful, hence all sorts of slowdowns and problems during playback. But that is already in the past.
Apparently, someone at Google decided that in an era of ubiquitous WiFi and 4G LTE networks, Android users could be given more freedom in choosing the quality options with which they can watch videos on their mobile devices. One way or another, but the other day YouTube was updated, and now the resolution of videos in it can change not only from ordinary computers, but also from tablets.
Why and how to do it?
Well, here's just one simple example. Imagine that you watch YouTube videos on an Android tablet not through the usual (and high-quality) home or office WiFi, and not even through the fashionable and expensive foreign 4G LTE, but through the 3G connection of one of the domestic telecom operators, besides being in such an area where there are few people and it is absolutely not necessary to wait for records in the speed of data transfer from an available communication channel. Represented?
Now try to predict how much of your time you will spend contemplating the mindlessly spinning wheel on the screen of your new Galaxy Note PRO, Sony Tablet or Lenovo Yoga? That's the whole answer ... (by the way, here's the price of tablets in the online store).
And in order not to overheat the nervous system, you just need to update the YouTube mobile application. Further work with video playback settings is extremely simple.
We open the application and go to the settings menu (3 dots - in the upper right corner of the screen) and in the drop-down window we see only three icons: letters SS (closed caption, i.e. subtitles), Gadget(Settings- settings) and checkbox (Flag Video— See later).
Click " Settings» and see the list of available options. Google now allows you to choose the resolution at which you can play the video (just like regular YouTube - 144p, 240p, 480, 720p or 1080p HD, depending on the original file settings).
Those. now you can personally determine the trade-off between the speed of downloading a file and the quality of the picture on the screen. Simply put, in order not to download huge FullHD (which, moreover, not every tablet will show) via 3G, you can stop at quite decent 480 points, with which YouTube videos on an Android tablet and / or smartphone are guaranteed to load without problems.

Theoretically, Youtube "optimizes" the files. Well, now there is a lot of mobile traffic, etc. In practice, the quality is killed. In my experience, it is 1080p that suffers the most - it is the most popular HD format, and after loading it turns out to be castrated just disgustingly.
Look, here are two screenshots - the first one is taken from the original, the second one is from a file downloaded from Youtube (using a convenient, simple and free 4K Video Downloader application, I highly recommend it, available for Win and Mac).

It can be seen that almost nothing remains of the original quality. The bitrate has decreased from 34 to 4 megabits - that is, more than eight times!
You need to understand that increasing the bitrate of the source when rendering above 20-30 Mb / s is practically useless - anyway, it will be recalculated and compressed by YouTube into the same 4-6 Mb / s.
At the same time, another thing is also clear - it is still inhuman to increase the bitrate of the Internet stream - for many users, the download will be very long, and not all mobile devices will play normally. It's bad that we can no longer manage the quality.
But there is one trick. If you set the video size slightly higher than 1080p when exporting from the montage, then Youtube switches to a higher bitrate.
For the experiment, I rendered the same video in 2048x1152 resolution. It is clear that there will be interpolation here, which in itself will not add quality, but we are trying to deceive YouTube and switch it to an increased bitrate without critically inflating the source.
We get a slightly larger file after rendering (about 700 mb), upload it to Youtube. And although when playing a video in the settings, we see the same 1080p item, the picture ultimately turns out to be much better in quality (the video is saved from Youtube in the "2K" format, the player window is reduced to 1080p):
With a slight increase in the source, the conversion bitrate more than doubled - from 4 to 10 Mb/s, and I think that this is a reasonable limit for Internet downloads.

Not ideal, of course, but for 10 Mb / s - more than adequate.
We must also understand that the problem of low bitrate is relevant, of course, not for all videos. I have a difficult case here - a lot of movement across the frame area, and to improve grading, I added some grain, which in itself eats up the useful volume of the video stream.
